Plumbing Catastrophes

December 18, 2019

No one really thinks about plumbing until it’s too late. Any number of plumbing issues could cause damage to a home, including: a clogged drain, a sewer backup, frozen pipes, leaky pipes, or even a septic system failure. Plumbing catastrophes are something you want to avoid at all costs. Therefore, homeowners are advised to know the warning signs and have a plan in case a “drip, drip, drip” becomes something that could ruin your home and possessions.

Warning Signs

Most homeowners don’t schedule regular plumbing check ups like they would a furnace or HVAC system. That’s why knowing the red flags of an impending plumbing problem is imperative.

Some of the most obvious signs are actually audibly noticeable. For instance, does your toilet sound like it is gurgling or bubbling when you flush it? Does the sound of running water continue even after you have turned off the dishwasher or kitchen sink? Can you hear dripping in the bathroom?  These are all noises that could indicate a potential plumbing issue.

Other warning signs include visibly corroding pipes in your basement, a strong sewer odor in your home, or even a shower with low water pressure. Each of these could mean an easy fix with the replacement of a washer that has eroded or a toilet that needs to be unclogged… or they could mean a larger plumbing problem.

The Danger of Water Damage

Leaking water from a pipe, sewer system, or toilet doesn’t just mean a mess to clean up and a costly repair bill. It could mean that a larger problem is just below the surface. Homes that have water damage may also have wood damage due to repetitive leaks. Not only could the wood become vulnerable to rot and decay, but the surrounding area could begin developing mold if left untreated.

If your home has experienced a plumbing catastrophe or water damage in general, you will want to act quickly to remediate any mold growth and to protect your structure from wood rot. Water is not a force you want to take lightly.
