As winter comes to and ends, give your home a complete checkup to ready it for those warm-weather months ahead.
You should start by taking a walk around your property especially after a storm.
Focus on areas such as the foundation, inspecting for signs of cracks. Roofs and chimneys can take on wear tear of the winter causing openings for water intrusion. Be safe, don’t climb up on your roof use binoculars to inspect shingles of the roof and joints between bricks or stones of the chimney.
Inspect the exterior walls regardless if you have wood siding, stucco or brick, look for trouble spots, especially under eaves and near gutter downspouts. Water stains can indicate that your gutters are not functioning properly. If you have wood siding, check for openings, making way for carpenter ants, woodpeckers and other critters that may nest in or burrow through.
Just as you tuned up your furnace for fall, now is the time to make sure that air conditioning units are in good working order for the warmer months ahead. Change the filter, check hose connections for leaks, and make sure the drain pans are draining freely. This is a common cause of Summer water damages, when the drain pan clogs causing the water to overflow and leak on to the ceiling below. If you suspect issues, now is the time to call in a professional to check it out.
Check the basement and under sinks regularly. Be aware of water pressure issues and growing water bills that could indicate a hidden leak. Check attics for any signs of water intrusion, staining or possible mold growth.
