Strange Bed Bug Hiding PlacesOctober 5, 2020
Bed bugs are most known for hitching a ride into homes, businesses, and other locations only to set up shop in and around the bed – thus the name, bed bug. Unfortunately, mattresses and boxsprings are not the only place bed bugs hide. While their name does give away their primary haven, there are plenty of strange and unusual places to find these pests.
Let’s start with a broad look at bed bugs. There have been reported bed bug cases in EVERY state in America. Not a single state is immune to infestation. For years now, the number of cases have been growing, with thousands of reported cases in 2019.
According to PestWorld online, these minuscule travelers often hide in a variety of unusual places that one would not think to look. They aim at staying in areas that give them access to blood when they are feeding and shelter when they are resting. That being said, now let’s take a closer look at some of the odd places these pests can be found.
It stands to reason that mattresses and box springs would be a first choice in a hiding place for a bed bug. They are sheltered and provide ample access to blood during their nocturnal feedings. Stuffed animals provide similar shelter and access to blood, especially if a child keeps the stuffed creature in their bed.
Purses & Backpacks
Bed Bugs are expert level hitchhikers. They find their way from one location to another by hitching onto clothing, shoes, and luggage in order to get to their next host. (That’s you.) Purses and backpacks are a perfect way to hitch a ride as these items are often placed on floors and provide ample hiding places. Always check your baggage for any extra travelers.
Airplanes & Busses
Bed bugs can be found burrowing in seats, on the carpet, and inside the vents on airplanes and busses. This makes it extremely crucial for travelers to take precautions, such as vacuuming out luggage after a trip and checking the upholstery on the seat before sitting.
In Bedroom Lamps and Switchplates
Look around your bedroom and you will find that the items around your bed include lighting and switchplates for all your electric needs. These places are excellent hiding places for bed bugs. They can easily slip behind the switch plates or into the wiring areas and hide during the day only to emerge at night to feed. Check under lamps and behind these items to ensure that this is not an odd location where these critters could be hiding
